Automated Software Deployment

Case Study

Background

Corporate growth and expansion was putting a strain on the 10 year-old software deployment platform. The internally developed set of scripts was requiring too many fixes to be useful. Audit capability was weak and the installation capabilities of the desktop operating system were not fully leveraged. Flexibility and affordability drove the need to de-centralize software deployment while maintaining centralized desktop engineering and standards.

What We Did

A third-party software solution providing a distributed, load-balanced, and secure deployment platform along with standards and processes for development of software packages, deployment scripts, and audit capabilities was implemented.

Low cost, outsourced resources were used for software packaging (although it was eventually brought back in-house)

The solution was integrated into the incident reporting system.

What We Achieved

Software distribution was predictable and both faster (when needed) and slower (to avoid network saturation). Integration with the ITIL-compliant incident tracking system allowed Service Desk and Desktop Support Technicians to install software. Detailed audit logs and diagnostics for failed installation attempts eased remediation efforts.
